A client is prescribed furosemide for heart failure. Which nursing assessment is most appropriate during the medication therapy?
- AMonitor serum potassium levels✓
- BCheck for liver enzyme elevation
- CMeasure blood glucose levels
- DAssess for peripheral neuropathy
Furosemide is a potent loop diuretic that acts on the loop of Henle, inhibiting reabsorption of sodium and chloride while promoting substantial potassium excretion. Long-term use can readily cause hypokalemia, increasing the risk of cardiac arrhythmias. Therefore, monitoring the serum potassium level is an essential pre-administration assessment; if the level is too low, the nurse should notify the provider to adjust the dose or to supplement potassium.
