Before performing any medical intervention, patient safety is always the nurse's foremost concern, and medication safety in particular is paramount. According to the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG), at least two identifiers (such as full name and date of birth) must be used to verify the client's identity prior to medication administration. This is the most fundamental and critical defense against medication errors. Although checking the expiration date, needle length, and skin disinfection technique are also important, administering the medication to the wrong patient would carry the most serious consequences.
