A nurse is preparing to administer medications to a group of clients. Which client should the nurse see first?
- AA client with diabetes scheduled for morning insulin
- BA client complaining of chest pain after taking sublingual nitroglycerin✓
- CA client with hypertension requesting their scheduled dose
- DA client with a scheduled antibiotic dose
Nursing assessment must follow priority principles, and chest pain indicates the risk of an acute coronary event. Even after the client has taken nitroglycerin, if pain remains unrelieved it suggests that the medication's effect is insufficient or that the condition is worsening; the nurse must therefore prioritize evaluating the ECG and vital signs. Insulin for the diabetic client and antihypertensive medication, while important, are lower priority in the absence of acute symptoms compared with persistent chest pain.
