In infection control, hand hygiene is the most basic and effective means of breaking the chain of contact transmission. Whether dealing with a multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) or other pathogens, organisms are most frequently spread between clients via contaminated hands of health care personnel. Although other measures such as private rooms or equipment disinfection are supportive, hand hygiene has overwhelming evidence supporting its effectiveness in reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Clinically, the nurse must strictly perform hand hygiene before and after client contact, before aseptic procedures, after contact with body fluids, and after contact with the client's environment.
