A nurse is teaching a parent about physiological jaundice in a newborn. Which statement by the parent indicates an understanding of the teaching?
- AIt is caused by an ABO incompatibility.
- BIt requires immediate blood exchange transfusion.
- CIt typically appears after the first 24 hours of life.✓ 正解通常出現在出生後 24 小時之後。
- DIt usually appears within the first 12 hours of life.
Neonatal jaundice is a common physiological phenomenon. The focus of nursing education is to help parents distinguish key features of physiological jaundice from pathological jaundice, especially the timing of onset. Physiological jaundice mainly results from the newborn's hepatic enzymes (such as UGT, glucuronosyltransferase) not yet being fully mature, so bilirubin cannot be effectively metabolized, combined with shorter red blood cell lifespan and increased breakdown. Understanding these features allows parents to assess the severity of jaundice correctly and seek medical care when necessary, avoiding delays in diagnosing and treating pathological jaundice, and thereby preventing potential brain damage (kernicterus) caused by hyperbilirubinemia.
