A lumbar puncture is a procedure used to obtain cerebrospinal fluid. The correct position is the lateral recumbent position with the knees drawn to the chest, which maximizes the spaces between the lumbar vertebrae and facilitates the puncture. After the procedure, the patient is typically kept supine to prevent post-dural-puncture headache from low CSF pressure. The patient must remain still throughout the procedure to avoid inadvertent injury to the spinal nerves. NPO status is not required for this procedure.
