A nurse is teaching a group of parents about infant safety. Which is the most important recommendation to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)?
- AAllow the infant to sleep with a stuffed animal
- BUse a soft, fluffy blanket for warmth
- CPlace the infant on their back to sleep✓
- DKeep the crib in the parent's bed
Prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) hinges on creating a safe sleep environment. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends that infants be placed on their backs ('Back to Sleep'), as this position maintains a patent airway. In addition, no soft bedding, pillows, stuffed animals, or blankets should be placed in the crib, as these can easily cause suffocation. The infant should sleep in a separate crib, not in the parents' bed, to avoid suffocation from being compressed or smothered by adults.
