Principles of medication administration via NG tube: 1) crush and administer medications separately to avoid drug interactions; 2) flush the tube with water before and after each medication to ensure complete delivery and prevent obstruction; 3) elevate the head of the bed to prevent aspiration pneumonia. Enteric-coated tablets must not be crushed because doing so destroys the controlled-release mechanism. Mixing medications together increases the risk of tube obstruction and pharmacologic interactions.
