A nurse is teaching a parent about child car seat safety. Which instruction is correct?
- AUse a rear-facing seat until at least age 2✓
- BPlace the car seat in the front passenger seat
- CSwitch to a booster seat as soon as the child can sit
- DThe harness should be loose to allow for movement
Strict safety standards govern the use of pediatric car seats. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), infants and toddlers should remain in a rear-facing seat for as long as possible, at least until age 2 or until they reach the maximum height and weight allowed by the seat manufacturer. Rear-facing seats provide superior protection for the fragile neck and spine of young children and substantially reduce the risk of injury in a collision. Other options, such as placing the seat in the front passenger seat, loose harness straps, or switching to a booster seat too early, all violate child safety principles.
