Skin cancer is primarily associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The core of skin cancer prevention is reducing the skin's absorption of UV radiation, and sunscreen is currently the most effective method. SPF 30 or higher blocks approximately 97% of UVB. In addition, UV radiation still penetrates clouds on overcast days, so sunscreen should be a daily habit rather than something used only on sunny days. The nurse should teach the client correct sun-protection concepts to reduce the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.
